The median nerve is one of three nerves of the hand. It arises from the spinal cord at the cervical vertebrae and emerges from the hollow of the armpit. From there, it travels the length of the upper arm, then down the middle of the anterior forearm to arrive at the middle of the wrist, hence its name. From there, it branches to the front of the hand. It is both a motor and a sensory nerve, causing the muscle contractions that produce extension of the elbow, wrist, and fingers, as well as relaying sensory information.
